Bring in the Bugs

Coming soon…

This will be a dive into ways to attract, catch, and get a good look at insects for close study and observation.

Building a Bug Bucket

A light trap for night-flying insects.

A large funnel was the most difficult component to find. I found this one at a local hardware store. It was handy that is was already all black. It is suggested that light colored funnels be painted black on the underside to prevent reflected light from leading insects back out of the bucket.

The light will be mounted just inside the funnel. I found a thin wood shim in the shed that I drilled a hole in just smaller than the base of the light from a lamp kit.

Cut the lid of the bucket just smaller than the diameter of the funnel. I used a box cutter and went very slowly. Then cut the end off the funnel to make an opening with a 4 to 5 cm diameter. This is larg enough to let bigger moths in, but keep them from flying back out.
